There was once a young artist who lived in Paris. Although he was very good, he had not yet enjoyed success with his painting and so had very little money. He was lonely and miserable and wondered if his life would ever get any better.
One day he heard a knock on his door and opened it to find a beautiful woman outside. She asked to come in for a few moments as she was lost and alone. He let her in and brought her a drink to calm her. The woman had skin as white as alabaster and hair as black as coal and round her neck she wore a black velvet ribbon.
The woman asked if she could stay and although the artist had very little offer, he let he stay with him as he was so enthralled with her beauty. She helped him to sell his paintings and charmed buyers to spend their money. At last the artist was enjoying success.
The weeks went on and he was happy as he was no longer alone and he had become obsessed with the woman. Although the woman sometimes became sad for no reason and he never saw her without her black velvet band around her neck. On one night, he decided to ask her to marry him. She agreed and they set a date for a few weeks’ time.
The day of the wedding came and they were married and celebrated with their friends. That night they went to bed and ask his new wife came to bed she was still wearing her black velvet band around her neck. He asked her to take it off and she refused, telling him that he would not want her to be without it. He found this strange but said nothing more about it.
But as he held her, his curiosity got the better of him and he could not help reach out and undo the clasp at the back to take it off. As the black velvet band came off, his new wife’s head rolled on to the floor and she lay lifeless before him with a knife in her hand.
She was a woman who had been killed at the guillotine for killing her husband after he had been unfaithful to her. She roamed Paris tricking men into marrying her and killing them on their wedding night. The artist survived by removing her black velvet band and revealing that her head had been chopped off.
Many years ago, a family was driving back home from seeing some family very late at night. Their relations lived in a remote part of the Yorkshire Moors and it meant that the family had to travel back along a dark and winding road which had very few lights along the way.
As they drove they were listening to the radio when a news bulletin came on the radio. The newsreader warned that a mad man who killed people by taking their head off with an axe had escaped from a mental hospital only a few miles away. The dad switched off the radio and turned on some music instead, but he made sure all the doors of the car were locked.
After about a mile, the car hit something on the road and the dad slammed on the breaks. Although it was dark he could just make out something large on the road. He didn’t want to get out of the car but was worried that he had injured and animal or possibly someone on the road. He told his wife and the children to keep the doors locked and that he would just go and check what it was. He got out of the car and his wife locked the doors behind him.
She waited in the car with the children but he didn’t come back. She didn’t want to get out of the car so they waited, growing more and more worried. Then she heard a bang on the roof of the car and they all screamed, but after the bang there was nothing else, no sounds..
They sat in the car until the sun came up, too scared to move and not knowing what had happened. Eventually a police car arrived and came to the car. The woman told them what had happened and they told the woman and the children to get out of the car and walk to the police car, get in but not to look round. They did this but as she was getting into the car, the woman turned round and saw, on the roof of her car, her husband’s severed head on the roof of the car.
A young female student has been out partying all night. She doesn’t want to Not disturb her roommate, so she sneaks into bed without turning on the light. When she wakes up the next morning, she discovers the dead and mutilated body of her friend and a message daubed in blood on the wall thanking her for not turning on the lights. When they are both back inside the building the cashier quickly locks the door behind him and points outside at the young man's car. Rumour has it that if you say the Lord's Prayer backwards at midnight whilst staring in a mirror, the devil will appear behind you...
