Another Hollywood relationship has hit the rocks – this time it’s Spider-Man and Mary Jane who have called it quits.
The comic book couple – whose love affair has translated to the big screen in three of the most successful movies in cinema history – have decided to split after 20 years together.
Joe Quesada, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, said it was time to shake things up in the life of Peter Parker, the nerdy New Yorker who upon being bitten by a radioactive spider gaining the ability to transform himself into a web-spinning hero.
He’s revealed that fans weren’t happy when they found out, saying: "When we first did it, the reaction was, 'How could you do this? This is a terrible thing to do."
"But with the first issue of 'Brand New Day' – the first comic book where he returns to single life - our letters very quickly changed to people saying, 'This is fantastic. This is the Spider-Man we remembered. We didn't know what we'd been missing'."
No word yet on whether the break-up will be reflected in the fourth movie. It’s currently in the planning stages at Sony Pictures.
