On a grey Tuesday afternoon, the streets were a swathe of Union flags as the 19-year-old swimmer was honoured with an open-top bus tour.
Earlier in the day, Adlington arrived at Mansfield's civic centre in a golden Rolls-Royce. She was then presented with a gold pair of Jimmy Choo shoes by the town's mayor Tony Egginton. They were in recognition of her performance at the games in Beijing which saw her do the double - gold in the 400m freestyle and then gold in the 800m freestyle.
The £460 hand-made Italian shoes called Clue are appropriately made out of watersnake.

Adlington's mother Kay, 48, father Stephen, 50, and two sisters Laura, 21, and 24-year-old Chloe, joined her on the open-top bus tour as it made its way through the Nottinghamshire town.
In recognition of Rebecca's success, the leisure centre where she first learned to swim is set to be renamed in her honour. Sherwood Swimming Baths in Mansfield Woodhouse will reopen in September 2009 as the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.
If that's not enough, it's just been revealed that a Yates pub in Mansfield will be renamed the Adlington Arms in honour of their local hero.
And this is how her homecoming unfolded...

Time to pose for the first of many photos.
Then a solo shot.. but where's the medals?
