Music has been shown to have a calming effect on babies from a young age. Some experts suggest playing music to them even before they are born as a baby’s hearing develops in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Babies are used to hearing noises from the inside of the womb and can even recognise voices before they are born. Music can be used to relax your baby and can even help send them to sleep. Below are some suggestions of different types of music which might help your baby and you, and some are songs you can sing to your baby which will be comforting to them.
There are lots of classical music CDs designed for specifically for babies. Here are some pieces of music which have been shown to have a calming effect. Some film soundtracks also have great relaxing music,
Brahms: Lullaby
Pachelbel: Canon in D
Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker – Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy
Lloyd-Webber: Requiem - Pie Jesu
Mozart: Ave Verum Corpus
Saint-Saens: Carnival of the Animals – The Swan
Soundtracks
John Barry: Out of Africa or Dances With Wolves
Patrick Doyle: Sense and Sensibility
Ennio Morricone: The Mission
It's important to play music that you like so that you can relax and enjoy it as well as your baby. Whilst it might not be a good idea to play very loud music with lots of clashing drums and twanging guitars, popular music can be just as relaxing as classical music. Below are some suggestions
Damien Rice - O
Coldplay - Parachutes
Michael Buble - Call Me Irresponsible
Norah Jones - Not Too Late
Corinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Rae
If you can remember any of the songs or nursery rhymes you used to sing as children, these are a great way of relaxing your baby as you can sing to them and they will recognise your voice. Some fot he songs you might remember are below.
Three Blind Mice
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
This Little Piggy
Rock a bye Baby
You are my Sunshine
