This gospel-based singing trio were huge selling R&B artists in their day. Trained from an early age by their devoutly Christian parents, they began singing in choirs when Sheila was just five, going as the Hutchinson Sunbeams.
They released their first album in 1969 called So I Can Love You, and title track written by Sheila herself, became a minor hit for the sisters.
Jeanette left the following year to start a family and was replaced by Theresa Davis who was in turn replaced by another Hutchinson sister Pamela.
Their 1970 hit Blind Alley was lifted by Mariah Carey for her US number one song Dreamlover. Mariah went on to show her love for the group with her song called Emotions not long after.
In the late 70s The Emotions started working with Maurice White from supergroup Earth, Wind And Fire and suddenly the world was at their feet. With smash hits like Best Of My Love behind them and the disco favourite Boogie Wonderland (with Earth, Wind And Fire) the group became one of the best of their era. But during the 80s they couldn’t find the same success, and they released their final album in 1990.
