Icebreakers

We've all been there. You might be known as being the person who always has somethign to say, but put you in front of someone gorgeous and you completly clam up!

You're not the only one - everyone get's a bit tongue-tied sometimes so it's useful to have some ideas of what you can say, and how to show your date you like them if your mind does go blank. We've complied a few icebreakers and ideas about what to say and do to help get you talking!

Do
Compliment them on what they are wearing, or something about the way they look. Everyone like to be paid compliments and it's a nice way to begin a conversation.

Comment positively on the bar or restaurant you are in. Perhaps the staff have been helpful or the atmosphere is friendly. IF they've chosen where you meet, this is also complimenting them. If you chose where you are, it will help explain why you wanted to take them there.

Talk briefly about your last holiday. It might be that you've just come back from a nice holiday or even just a weekend away. Use this to ask them about where they have recently travelled to, or where they would like to go.

Tell them about something you enjoy doing. You could talk about the latest film you've just been to see or that last music gig you've been to.

Look into their eyes. When someone is talking, it's polite to give them your attention and show that you are interested in them.

Don't
Don't be negative. If you are going to comment on something, make sure it's to say something nice. No one likes being out with someone who just wants to moan about everything!

Don't talk so much they can't get a word in edgeway! It;s good to be entusiastic about things you've done or what youn like, but use the opportunity to ask them their opinion and about themselves.

Don't interrupt them.

Don't just walk out on them. If you really don't like them, let them know politely that you are leaving and thank them for the date.

Still can't think of anything to say?
We've put together some conversation openers which might help:

  • Do you have a favourite bar or restaurant?
  • What do you like about your job?
  • Where did you grow up?
  • Have you travelled much?
  • If you were on a deserted island who would you most like to be stranded with?
  • Where would you like to go on holiday to?
  • What's your favourite park to have a picnic in the Summer?
  • What's your favourite cocktail?

Good luck!
