AmeCon - 12:00PM 08/08/2008

AmeCon is the largest convention in the United Kingdom dedicated to the celebration of Japanese animation, comics and culture. Following some successful one-day events, several committee members of the Leicester Anime and Manga Club (LANMA - http://www.lanma.org.uk) decided to run a small, residential event in 2004. This event, through no fault of their own, became the largest anime convention to be hosted in the British Isles at that time. In 2006, AmeCon moved from Oldby to the main University of Leicester Campus and has been hosted there ever since. In the following years, we've introduced various events to almost 1300 attendees, including the Cosplay Triathlon and the UK's first convention-based cosplay ball. Since moving to the main campus, AmeCon has continued to build upon its previous events, and this year is no exception AmeCon 2008 will be running between 8-10 August 2008. You can find out further information on the website, or register today on the forum to discuss the convention or anime/manga fandom in general, ask questions or make suggestions for the convention. With that said, we hope you enjoy the website and hope to see you in August 2008. See you there ^_^

Chinese Acrobatic Swan Lake - 07:30PM 13/08/2008
location - Theatre Royal, Nottingham
Wednesday - Saturday 7.30pm Saturday 2.30pm Swan Lake gets a radical makeover from a unique Chinese company combining classical ballet and traditional acrobatics to create a spectacular new interpretation of the greatest classical ballet of all time. The Guandong Acrobatic Company’s extraordinary Acrobatic Swan Lake – in which Black Swans dance on high wires and the Swan Princess dances on pointe on her partner’s head - has created a worldwide sensation. In this fresh and original adaptation of Swan Lake, a European prince falls in love with a Chinese swan, and performers use acrobatics and their very considerable talents as classical dancers to tell the story. Pole balancing, jumping through fire hoops, rope walking, ball walking and jujitsu are all seamlessly woven into the story, and there is constant blurring of performance styles, including not only ballet and acrobatics but also elements of Peking Opera. Directed by Guangzhou Acrobatic Company’s director Ning Genfu and choreographed by former Hong Kong Ballet principal dancer Zhao Ming, the production grew out of a desire to bring the traditional performing art out of the circus tent and onto the stage. It was created as a co-production with Shanghai City Dance Company. Acrobatic Swan Lake includes scenes in which the White Swan dances on pointe on top of the Prince’s head and shoulders and another in which the famous dance of four little swans is transformed into a performance of four little frogs, played by men who do the entire dance on their arms. The incredible pas de deux between Wei Baohua's Prince and Wu Zhengdan's White Swan has made the couple – husband and wife in real life – into international stars. The production proved a hit at its Premiere in Beijing in 2006 and has since thrilled audiences worldwide, from Moscow to New York.

With the assistance of a skilful and flexible cast of dancers, acrobats and athletes, worms slither menacingly across the stage: huge pillows float cloudlike through the air, a giant stalks the auditorium and, just when you think you've seen it all, a new scenario develops to enchant and enthral you. Since it was first performed at the Israel Festival in Jerusalem in 2003. The Aluminum Show has toured Israel, Argentina and the Netherlands, as well as taking up lengthy residences in Athens, Greece, and Lisbon, Portugal. The show has been greeted with wonder and delight wherever it travels, with critics comparing it to the Blue Man Group and Stomp. But The Aluminum Show is something you have to see for yourself, because it really is a show like no other. A spectacular phenomenon guaranteed to keep the whole family entertained
