Opera North - A Midsummer Night's Dream - 07:15PM 29/05/2008
location - Theatre Royal, Nottingham
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM Benjamin Britten (1960) NEW PRODUCTION Out in the wood Oberon, the Fairy king and Tytania, his queen, are locked in dispute, and their conflict has turned nature upside down. In the city live two young women, best friends, one loved by two men, the other by none. When these four escape the harsh restrictions of the city for the freedom of the wood it’s their relationships that are turned upside down, so much so that they hardly know each other – or even themselves. By contrast, Bottom the weaver – in the wood with his workmates rehearsing for some amateur theatricals – is always sure of himself, even when he’s been made an ass of . . . Few composers have matched music to words to such potent effect as Britten does in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In Shakespeare’s comedy the composer found themes close to his heart: night, dreams, the supernatural. He was inspired to write his most melodious opera, with a witty and utterly beguiling score. Martin Duncan has been responsible for some of Opera North’s most joyously theatrical occasions, including Orpheus in the Underworld and, more recently, The Adventures of Pinocchio. Here he directs a production that promises to conjure a heady, intoxicated atmosphere where love is definitely the drug. There’s no more enchanting way to spend a summer’s evening than this. Breaking the Silence - 07:45PM 29/05/2008
location - Nottingham Playhouse Theatre
Caught up in the maelstrom of post-revolutionary Russia, the Pesiakoff family lose their palatial Moscow home and are re-accommodated in a dilapidated imperial train, complete with their maid. Assigned the position of telephone inspector, Nikolai, unflappable and immaculate in his elegant English suit, soon neglects his duties for a private ambition: to be the first man in the world to record sound on film. We invite you to join this exuberant family as they clatter across the Soviet Union, striving to succeed and survive in a world with a dangerous and uncertain future. Stephen Poliakoff is widely regarded as one of the finest playwrights of his generation and Britain's foremost screenwriter. Inspired by the true history of his family, and originally commissioned by the RSC, this is the first major staging of the play in over twenty years. "One of the most thrillingly individual works of the last decade." The Sunday Times Director Esther Richardson Designer Jamie Vartan
