Opera North - Romeo et Juliette - 07:15PM 30/05/2008
location - Theatre Royal, Nottingham
ROMÉO ET JULIETTE
Charles Gounod (1867)
NEW PRODUCTION
Two powerful families – the Montagues and the Capulets – are divided by age-old enmity. When Roméo and his Montague friends gatecrash a Capulet party, he meets Juliette and they fall deeply, dangerously in love. Amidst escalating violence they are secretly married by the sympathetic Friar Laurent, who hopes that their union may begin to reconcile the feuding families. It does – but only after Roméo and Juliette have paid the ultimate price.
Dramatic, ardent, unfailingly melodic, Gounod takes the world’s best-known love story and makes of it a lavish melodrama. The clashes between the Montagues and Capulets generate tremendous excitement, and for the lovers there is a succession of magnificent duets, jewels set amongst a lushly orchestrated score.
John Fulljames, who staged an imaginative Hansel and Gretel for Opera North at various concert venues in 2006, directs two rising young stars in the title roles. Slovenian soprano Bernarda Bobro makes her British debut as Juliette and Leonardo Capalbo, who made a considerable impact with the Company as Paco in La vida breve (2004) and Juan in Arms and the Cow (2006), is her Roméo.
Roméo et Juliette is one of one of the great romantic operas, extravagantly French, by a composer known to his contemporaries as the ‘musician of love’. It is not to be missed.

Liza Minnelli - 07:30PM 30/05/2008
location - Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham
In these days of manufactured artists the term ‘superstar’ is all too often bestowed upon those whose ‘star’ has barely ascended. The term can truly only be used when talking about a handful of entertainers. Liza Minnelli is one of those entertainers.
Following an outstanding summer of sell-out, critically acclaimed US and European concert dates, the legendary Liza Minnelli is set to tour the UK in May and June 2008 with Liza bringing her spectacular two hour show to the Royal Concet Hall Nottingham.
This uniquely talented, multi-award winning singer/actress/dancer – her stack of international awards include the Oscar for Best Actress (‘Cabaret’ 1973), a Grammy, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and many others – will perform with a 12 piece orchestra, four dancers and singers and is certain to raise the roof of every venue she visits with That Voice…
Simon Amstell - 10:30PM 30/05/2008
location - Nottingham Playhouse Theatre
SIMON AMSTELL
Simon Amstell, winner of two British Comedy Awards, is on tour.
"as close as you can get to a man emotionally and philosophically disembowelling himself on stage" The Times
"intellectually sophisticated, engagingly honest, genuinely accomplished stand-up". The Scotsman
"consistently witty and intelligent... perceptive and very funny". The Stage
"his showily neurotic but deliberately dry demeanour melding neatly into the existentialist...the
hugely likeable Amstell has intelligently got the audience to see the world his way" Metro
"Amstell... offers a probing, cerebral show... He speaks for a disconnected, disengaged chunk of Britain, sitting in their own trendily furnished boxes waiting for the world - or some meaningful cause – to come bursting through the door. It doesn't" The Independent
Breaking the Silence - 07:45PM 30/05/2008
location - Nottingham Playhouse Theatre
Caught up in the maelstrom of post-revolutionary Russia, the Pesiakoff family lose their palatial Moscow home and are re-accommodated in a dilapidated imperial train, complete with their maid. Assigned the position of telephone inspector, Nikolai, unflappable and immaculate in his elegant English suit, soon neglects his duties for a private ambition: to be the first man in the world to record sound on film.
We invite you to join this exuberant family as they clatter across the Soviet Union, striving to succeed and survive in a world with a dangerous and uncertain future. Stephen Poliakoff is widely regarded as one of the finest playwrights of his generation and Britain's foremost screenwriter. Inspired by the true history of his family, and originally commissioned by the RSC, this is the first major staging of the play in over twenty years.
"One of the most thrillingly individual works of the last decade." The Sunday Times
