Opera North - Macbeth - 07:15PM 28/05/2008
location - Theatre Royal, Nottingham
MACBETH
Giuseppe Verdi (1865)
NEW PRODUCTION
Macbeth is a successful warrior – the hero of his king, Duncan, whose enemies he has routed in battle. But seduced by a dark prophecy that foretells of greater things for him, and goaded by his wife, Macbeth becomes consumed by ambition. Having murdered the king and seized power he discovers that, to keep it, more and more blood must be spilt. Caught in a spiral of violence, Macbeth and his lady descend into madness and despair.
‘One of mankind’s greatest creations’ is how Verdi described Shakespeare’s play. Determined to transmute as much of the weirdness and ferocity of the original text into music as possible he aimed to create a work of ‘extravagance and originality’. He succeeded spectacularly, producing a fantastically exciting drama, of which the famous chorus ‘Patria oppressa!’ is but one of many musical highlights.
Tim Albery is one of the world’s leading opera directors, and he has been responsible for some of Opera North’s most notable recent successes, including Madama Butterfly, Katya Kabanova and The Fortunes of King Croesus in 2007. Robert Hayward, who has already sung one of the great Verdi roles for us this season – Falstaff – returns in the title role, and the Italian soprano Antonia Cifrone makes her Opera North debut in one of the most demanding musical and dramatic roles in the repertoire.

Breaking the Silence - 07:45PM 28/05/2008
location - Nottingham Playhouse Theatre
Caught up in the maelstrom of post-revolutionary Russia, the Pesiakoff family lose their palatial Moscow home and are re-accommodated in a dilapidated imperial train, complete with their maid. Assigned the position of telephone inspector, Nikolai, unflappable and immaculate in his elegant English suit, soon neglects his duties for a private ambition: to be the first man in the world to record sound on film.
We invite you to join this exuberant family as they clatter across the Soviet Union, striving to succeed and survive in a world with a dangerous and uncertain future. Stephen Poliakoff is widely regarded as one of the finest playwrights of his generation and Britain's foremost screenwriter. Inspired by the true history of his family, and originally commissioned by the RSC, this is the first major staging of the play in over twenty years.
