Night on Bare Mountain is one of Mussorgsky’s most colourful and boldly original short orchestral pieces (heard here in Rimsky-Korsakov’s revised version). The bitter-sweet lyricism of Prokofiev’s 2nd Violin Concerto stems from his search for a simpler musical language during the 1930s. Rachmaninov’s Symphony no 2 shows the composer at his most expansive and most richly romantic.
