Mussorgsky - Night on a Bare Mountain Prokofiev - Violin Concerto No. 2 Rachmaninov - Symphony No. 2 Conductor - Mark Gorenstein Soloist - Sergei Girshenko (violin) The season ends with an all-Russian programme full of strong contrasts. Night on Bare Mountain is one of Mussorgsky’s most colourful and boldly original short orchestral pieces (heard here in Rimsky-Korsakov’s revised version). The bitter-sweet lyricism of Prokofiev’s 2nd Violin Concerto stems from his search for a simpler musical language during the 1930s.
