Matt Wilkinson's Blog

First things first, I’m in my mid-twenties and that fact makes what I’m about to write that little bit more distressing.

My ‘friends’ like to have a little poke at me sometimes by noticing a certain patch of bare skin on my head and making light of this so-called ‘bald patch’. I reply, as always - and now well rehearsed, that in actual fact it’s not what they think but instead it’s purely a double crown. My creator, perhaps, decided that I would look good with two sprouting areas for hair follicles rather than the usual one. Hoping, I expect, that having twice as many sprigs of hair would mean just that - a barnet full of thick, glorious hair. That’s what I thought.

I went to the barbers for a chop on Friday. You know that bit where they hold up the mirror behind you so you can see their hard work/survey the damage. I noticed something staring straight back at me. A BALD PATCH! My friends were right all along. There’s no getting away from it. Within a few months I reckon I’ll resemble a peach before nectarine territory arrives soon after.

I should have read the signs really. When I was young my party trick used to be pulling out great clumps of hair without any pain. At the time I thought it was quite funny, yet all along I was probably speeding up the inevitable. I read an article in the paper just the other day saying that if you can pull your hair out without feeling it that’s not a good sign (pretty obvious admittedly but seeing it in black and white makes you panic a bit more).

As you can imagine, I now have a bit of a complex about the whole thing. Not helped by my producer who, at the weekend, bounded into the studio and said ‘Afternoon Matt, cor!! Look at that bald patch - you look like a monk!’

Thanks a lot!

So what do I do now?? Know any good herbal remedies or old wives tales on preventing hair loss? I’ll try anything. Let me know your thoughts and we’ll see if they work.  Email me here.

See you tonight from 7pm and remember no poking fun at me on the text now…
