The Joys of the Eighties

How was your weekend? It was a mixed bag for weather, wasn’t it? Sometimes great, other times miserable. I found myself driving around with the windows all wound down at one time and the next stuck on my sofa contemplating which random channel on Sky I should try next.

It therefore gave me time to appreciate some really good films which I hadn’t seen for ages. Hook with the excellent Dustin Hoffman on Five, Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory (the original Gene Wilder one - complete with sing-a-long Oompa Lumpa lyrics!!) on Living… or was it Dave… or Virgin 1 - oh I don’t know they all blend into one.

The film I was most excited about was Ghostbusters on Gold (I think?!). It was on slap bang in the middle of the afternoon but actually quite scary (I’m not referring to the marshmallow man incidentally, rather the librarian at the beginning). I used to love watching the Ghostbusters films when I was young. They are a great example of films that are still just as good today as they were when they were released.

Lots of 80s films fall into that category. Top Gun, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Rain Man and Three Men and a Baby (OK maybe not that one) were all massive and are still really enjoyable for those who remember them from back in the day and those who are just being introduced to them for the first time.

The same can be said for a lot of 80s music - a fantastic decade for songs. Some sound very ‘eighties’ others just as fresh as anything else around today but all great to enjoy over and over again. We celebrate the best of the 80s music scene every Sunday night from 7pm and also between 8 and 9pm every Monday - Thursday on the evening show. I hope you can join me for them tonight.

Also, if you have a particular favourite 80s song that you’d like to tell me about please feel free to email me via the website. I may even be able to play the song on the show as well!

See you later…
