I was amazed to discover recently that there are still tickets available for Glastonbury. I remember last year trying in vain for 3 hours straight and pressing redial on two phones whilst constantly clicking refresh on my computer but was unsuccessful in my attempts to secure tickets… the first time around. It wasn’t until the little advertised third resale that I managed to get a ticket for the festival.
I had a truly memorable time. You may have noticed that I didn’t stick the word ‘great’ before ‘time’ in that last sentence. Not that I didn’t, you see - it was strange because there were times when it was absolutely amazing and others where all I could think of was how much I wanted to sit down. When you’re in a field for 5 days under constant rain there isn’t just mud in the normal day-in-the-countryside way, it’s EVERYWHERE there isn’t a square foot of grass in sight. So if you want to sit down at least once in the middle of 18 hrs of being on your feet you simply can’t!
That said you cannot beat seeing so many fantastic bands in one place with a load of people whom you may have never met but all seem to have a mutual respect for each other. My highlights, which I wouldn’t have traded for anything (despite the rain), were dancing - or should that be trudging rhythmically - along to Bjork on one of the first days. Whilst on the last day it was standing in the rain with about 50 000 people all forgetting about their tired legs and singing at the top of their voices ‘Hey, Big Spender…’ alongside Shirley Bassey in her pink wellies!! That was truly a once in a lifetime moment and the perfect end to an exhausting but fun 6 days.
My advice if you are contemplating going this year still is to go for it. It may be wet, hopefully it will be dry. There will be times when the unglamorous side gets to you but it is SO worth it! It is a 100% unique experience.
One final thing, I got a present at the weekend which I’ve been playing non stop for the last few days. I can’t wait to tell you about it... in my next blog...
Tune in tonight from 7 if you can and don’t forget Absolutely 80s at 8 o’clock.
